For today's round of the Splish Splash Blog Bash I'm sharing some of my favorite summer books. Books I adore, having read them time and time again, recent reads, and a few that I'm thinking about starting. Let's get to it!
by Chuck Palahniuk
I adore Chuck Palahniuk. He's an amazing writer.
He's the guy who wrote Fight Club and Choke, both of which are now movies.
This book is insane. The writing, the plot progression, the climax.
I happened to pick up this book years ago when my flight had a lay over in Seattle. I walked into the book store looking for something to strike my interest, and there it was - Diary. I am so happy I grabbed this book on a whim. One of my better life choices.
By J.D. Salinger
This book is a total classic. I can't tell you the number of times I've read it. And I'll read it countless times again. I'm a sucked for a self-loathing protagonist I guess.
By Veronica Roth
I picked up Divergent two weeks ago. I read it in two days.
I can't remember where I originally heard about this book, but the review was, "If you liked The Hunger Games, you'll like Divergent." Good enough for me. I had finished reading The Hunger Games series about a month and a half ago. Great books.
So I dove in and I'm hooked!
By Veronica Roth
The second book in the Divergent series. The first book has a two chapter teaser for Insurgent, crafting marketing there. I had the run out and get this book after finishing Divergent. Here is my disclaimer about this book: It's good, it sucked me in and I was happy to be trapped in this world. But...the third book isn't out until 2013 and you're going to want it right away. You've been warned.
by Marilyn Manson
Not into Marilyn Manson? That's okay. This book is totally amazing.
The stories are a little in your face and full of "that seriously happened?" moments, but the journey is inspiring. This is a great read for musicians and anyone wanting to know what goes on behind the scenes of a rock stars life, from childhood to unbridled glory.
The Hunger Games Series
By Susan Collins
You can't go wrong with The Hunger Games Series. I blasted through these books in a week. The story has a lot of turns to keep things interesting. I'm curious to see what the other movies are like. The Hunger Games movie that came out was pretty much on, considering the liberties Hollywood is know to take with some of my favorite books (eh hem...The Vampire Lestat...so sad).
The Fifty Shades of Grey Series
by E L James
Are we seeing the series trend I'm into right now?
So I've heard these books have been dubbed "mommy porn." Interesting category.
I know next to knowing about them. The only thing I've heard is that it's basically a fetish version of Twilight if everyone had been human and Edward hadn't held back.
I'd love to know what you've heard/thought about these books.
What are you favorite summer reads? Why do you like that book?
My favorite way to find new books to read is recommendations and I'd love to hear yours!

My evening routine includes reading time (after blogging time, of course!), currently I am on book 3 of the Grey series. I won't spoil anything for you! I don't have a list of books to read this summer, but I have a fantastic MIL who always brings me the books she has finished reading, and she never disappoints with her picks!
ReplyDeleteI love to read as well, and I'm thinking I need to add Diary and Divergent to my list. Holden was my first ever boyfriend, I seriously wished he was real so I could date him, and the Hunger Games trilogy rocked my socks for a week straigt. Read them all in like a week. And then wished for more. Not a huge fan of 50 shades. Read the first one, and look forward to reading the rest, just not on my list of must reads. I still can't get over it's similarity to Twilight. Well Eclipse if we are being honest.
ReplyDeleteGreat list!
So yeah-- 50 50 50 shades of crazy shades! It's ok . just ok in my book. I am on book 2 and having a very hard time getting through it. Not all it's cracked up to be... my opinion! I am soooo excited to start the Divergent-- I have heard NOTHING but the best about those books!! Nice list girl!
ReplyDeleteGreat choices! If you like the 50 Shades of Gray books, you might want to check out the Kushiel's Dart books. They're more epic/historical-fantasy/political intrigue, but also very sensual. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm dying to read the Divergent series- and even more after hearing your take on them! I've also thought about picking up Fifty Shades of Grey but hear so many different opinions about them!! Excited to try some new reads though :)
ReplyDeleteGood choices! We read the hunger games books (very good) I just got finished reading Hope Springs really good book.
ReplyDeleteMy dd has been BEGGING me to get Insurgent. I need to find it lendable on the kindle LOL
ReplyDeleteOkay, this is the third time someone has mentioned the Divergent series!! It must be a sign. :) I'll have to check them out! :)
